One of my favorite places to photograph expecting parents is right where they already feel most themselves, at home. At home maternity photos capture something truly intimate and grounding, documenting your pregnancy surrounded by the walls that already hold your story.
In this post, I’ll walk you through why at home maternity photos are some of the most heartfelt images you can have, what makes them different from outdoor sessions, and how to prepare your space for photos that feel soft, real, and deeply personal.
Hi! I’m Jessica, a maternity, birth, and family photographer based in Beaumont, AB, serving Edmonton and the surrounding area. As a mama and a storyteller, I believe in capturing motherhood in its truest form: unposed, emotional, and full of quiet connection.
If you’re dreaming about photos that feel more like memories than portraits, an in home session might be exactly what your heart needs. I’d love to help you bring that vision to life. Whether you’re ready to book or simply exploring, I’m here to make the experience easy, relaxed, and deeply meaningful

The Beauty of At Home Maternity Photos
Your home holds so much of your story. The morning light in your bedroom, the way you move through your space, the nursery you’ve lovingly prepared. These are the little things that deserve to be remembered.
At home maternity photos allow you to slow down and simply be. There’s no rushing, no worrying about the weather, and no distractions. It’s just you, your partner, your growing belly, and the rhythm of your life unfolding right where it happens.
I love the way at home sessions highlight the intimacy of this season. The tender hand on your belly, your favorite cozy chair, bare feet on hardwood floors. Every image becomes a piece of your real, everyday beauty.
A Real Edmonton In Home Maternity Session
Recently, I had the honor of photographing a couple in their cozy Edmonton home. We started in their main living area, where the morning light poured through the windows and filled the space with a soft glow. They laughed, cuddled, and paused often to feel their baby kick.
Then we moved into their bedroom, where the light was even more beautiful, gentle and diffused, wrapping them in the kind of warmth that only home can hold.
That’s the magic of at home maternity photography. It isn’t about creating something perfect. It’s about seeing your life, your love, and your anticipation, and letting it shine exactly as it is.

How to Prepare Your Home for a Maternity Session
You don’t need a magazine ready home to have beautiful photos. In fact, the beauty lies in the realness: the soft blankets, the lived in corners, and the warmth that already exists there.
A few simple tips can help you make the most of your at home maternity photos:
- Find the light. Notice which rooms have the best natural light, especially in the morning or late afternoon.
- Tidy lightly. Clear surfaces and remove clutter, but don’t stress over perfection.
- Choose outfits that feel like you. Flowy dresses, knits, and bare feet photograph beautifully in home settings.
- Keep personal touches. That mug you always use, your baby’s little booties, or a cozy throw can make your photos feel deeply personal.
Remember, your home doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to be yours.

When to Schedule Your At Home Maternity Photos
The best time for maternity photos is usually between 28 and 34 weeks, when your belly is beautifully round but you still feel comfortable moving around.
For at home sessions, I recommend scheduling during the day when your home has the best natural light, often late morning or early afternoon. The soft, even lighting makes everything feel warm and timeless.
If you prefer an outdoor session, we can plan around sunset or sunrise for that dreamy golden light. Whether you’re at home or outside, I’ll help you choose the best time and location based on your vision and comfort.
If you’re in Edmonton or nearby (Beaumont, Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove), I’d love to help you plan your perfect maternity session.
Including Partners, Pets, and Family
At home maternity photos are the perfect way to include your whole family, whether that’s your partner, your other kids, or your pets.
Often, some of my favorite images come from these in between moments: your partner’s hands resting on your belly, your toddler giggling on the bed, your cat or dog curled up nearby. It’s less about posing and more about connection.
Because, you don’t have to look a certain way or do anything fancy. Your love and connection are already enough.

Why Families in Edmonton Love In Home Sessions
I hear it all the time from Edmonton families: “We’re so glad we chose to do our photos at home.”
There’s something incredibly special about being photographed in your own space. You can relax, move at your own pace, and be fully present without the distractions of the outside world. You’re surrounded by the little details that already hold meaning, the nursery you’ve prepared, the couch where you spend quiet evenings, the morning light that fills your home.
In home sessions create a sense of calm and authenticity that’s impossible to replicate anywhere else. Every photo becomes part of your family’s real story, captured with honesty, warmth, and love.

Whether you’re snuggled on the couch with your partner, feeling those tiny kicks, or dreaming about what’s to come, your story deserves to be told.
